What’s all the talk about talking?

When did your child first start talking? For some of you reading this you will hardly be able to recall a time when your little person was silent. For others, however, you may be frustrated waiting for your child to say their first words let alone their first sentences. Maybe you have friends and family telling you ‘not to worry’ and ‘he’ll talk when he’s ready’? Is this true? Are Speech Pathologists just an overly cautious bunch who want everyone talking as soon as possible?

Whilst a child will often begin to communicate with words eventually we do have reason to be vigilant. Research tells us that children who were Late Talkers are at greater risk of language and learning challenges at school. They may also face specific difficulties developing literacy.

If your little person is heading off to school next year, now is a great time to review their skills. If he or she:

  1. Was later than average to start talking

  2. Ever experienced difficulties with particular speech sounds

  3. Finds it challenging to follow instructions or answer questions

  4. Has not yet taken an interest in learning such as asking questions and “reading books”

Now is the perfect time to see a Speech Pathologist to review your little person’s speech, language and literacy skills. If you want to know more about your child’s early talking, read more here.
